During its first visit day in Qatar, the members of the EU – Qatar Parliamentary Friendship Group, Ramona Manescu (chair) EPP – Romania, Claudia Tapardel S&D – Romania, Gabriela Zoana S&D – Romania, Cristian Preda EPP – Romania, Filiz Hyusmenova ALDE – Bulgaria, Nedzhmi Ali ALDE – Bulgaria, Miroslav Mikolasik EPP – Slovakia, met with the HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.
His Excellency briefed the delegation on the recent developments regarding the Gulf Crisis, about Qatar efforts to deal with the regional challenges especially those on human rights. The blockade pushed Qatar in becoming more independent and consolidate the nation. He stressed the importance of enhancing coordination between the EU and Qatar in terms of security and other fields of common interest and stressed that Qatar’s neighbors don’t agree with its independent foreign policy.
The Minister informed about the educational reforms Qatar is working on or are under implementation, and he made an overview of the partnership relations with the EU. He also informed the delegation about women empowerment (51% of women work in Qatar).
HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani recommended for the European governments to become more involved and for the EU to voice out the human rights issues in Qatar. Only Germany made public statements on these issues until now.
