Today, Ramona Manescu, in her capacity of Chairman of the EU-Qatar Parliamentary Friendship Group, met in Strasbourg with His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri, Chairman of the Qatar National Human Rights Committee (NHRC).
The meeting focused on the human rights situation in Qatar and the neighboring countries and the latest evolutions in the Gulf crisis.
His Excellency presented to the EU-Qatar Parliamentary Friendship Group a series of reports issued by NHRC. Among these, I received “100 Days Under the blockade – NHRC Third report on human rights violations caused by the blockade imposed on the State of Qatar”; “Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Impedes Qatari Society’s Performance of Hajj And Umrah”; “Educational Institutions in the countries of the blockade are improper Educational Destination. What does the future hold for students under violations of the right of education?”, and “Report on violations of the right to Private Property due to the Siege imposed on the state of Qatar”.
Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri also presented a collection of international position regarding the Gulf crisis and its implications on human rights. There are statements and reports from United Nations Human Rights – Office of the Commissioner, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and others.
Another point in the discussion was the possibility of a European Parliament Delegation visit to Qatar. Such a visit would offer the European Parliament members the chance to see on the ground the human rights situation and the difficulties caused by the Gulf crisis.
His Excellency expressed the strong desire of Qatar to further avoid citizens’ suffering as an effect of this political crisis and his hopes of a sooner and constructive resolution to it.
